Now that’s not the M5 from Star Trek for all you nerds like me. It’s an environmental filtration unit designed to filter waste water from the drain in your washout booth. In this video Greg explains how the simple system works, the variations on draining the unit and the benefits of using such a water filtration unit. You’ll get to see the unit before it is installed and see the innards as we discuss the functions. It’s a basic “coffee filter” type system that can trap particulates 5 microns in size or bigger, anything smaller than 5 microns will settle in the first tank of the unit before the filtered water is pumped into the drain. The latest educational screenprinting video uploaded to YouTube is called, “Screen Printing Tip: Amazing Spray Can Paint Thinner!” This video is a bit of a satire of the old Billy Mays style infomercials, may he rest in peace. But it does give you an update on what video is coming up next week and it also introduces you to something new I found at the hardware store. Evidently you can get paint thinner in a spray paint type can. That’s right! Spray aerosol paint thinner! I had never seen this stuff before and maybe it was just new for that brand but I never noticed this type of product in all my paint thinner purchases. LOL… what does that say of me? Don’t laugh at that because you’ll probably laugh at my infomercial satire anyway.

The Hipster Glasses – We created the vector eyeglasses completely from scratch. It wasn’t that time-consuming, but ultimately very rewarding since we were able to get the exact look that we were going for. In many ways the glasses are the focal point of the design so it was definitely essential that we get them just right.

Typography – We wanted to experiment with the typography of the t-shirt and create our own unique font. We’re really pleased with the way “cooler” came out and how it contributes to the overall design. Getting the look of the letters right is an often under appreciated aspect of a design, but for many designs it is vital. We’ll hope you agree that the type is just right for the design.

Uncommon Color Combos – Doing this design also gave us the opportunity to play around with unusual color combos. Getting the coloring of the design just right is another key aspect of the design and we thought long and hard about the colors we ended up settling on.

Color Shading Effect – Here at You Design It we usually print in solid spot colors without shading or gradients. That is because it is difficult to get shading just right in the final printed product to yield the type of results that the original design mock up called for. Doing this shirt gave us a great chance to practice executing this skill. It was also a pivotal part of the design which sets the tone for the shirt.

Mock Photo Shoot – One of the most enjoyable parts of the whole experience was the fact that after the t-shirts were printed we did a mock photo shoot to display the shirts. It was a ton of fun getting our friends together to model the shirts and figuring out the best poses, lighting, and setting.

Considering how much fun it was to put together this hipster t-shirt you can definitely expect more cool original designs to be coming soon. We’re already tossing around new design ideas for future projects and we also appreciate any feedback you may have to offer. As a coach preparing for the postseason the last thing you need to be worrying about is the design or turnaround of your playoff tees. This was recently the case when we were contacted by a coach who uploaded two designs but also said we had the creative freedom to make something better. We opted to for the latter to create something from scratch. For us that is like rolling the dice but it was a gamble we were willing to take. Fortunately…we didn’t disappoint.

This screen printing educational video is called, “How To Screen Print: Metallic Transfer Foil On Black T Shirts” and goes through a rundown on the printed adhesive and transfer foil effect. Here you will learn about the plastisol foil adhesive and how to screenprint it onto the shirt before applying the foil. The adhesive is printed directly onto the tee shirt and cured in this video. You’ll get to see the shirts go through the oven to cure the printed foil adhesive design and go to the heat press. At the heat press you’ll see the shirts get the metallic transfer foil pressed to the printed foil adhesive. Come along on this fantastic voyage as we learn that some transfer foils do not transfer as cleanly as others. At the end of the video you’ll get to see close up shots of the finished metallic foiled print and hear Jonathan’s thoughts on this particular transfer foil. The new video is called, “How To Screenprint Numbers With Ryonet’s Numbering System.” This educational screen printing video is a product “how to” review on Ryonet’s numbering system. In this secondary video about the system we proceed to print the numbers we set up in the first video. Here you will get to see the numbers 2, 22, and 21 printed with the system in a rear mount manual rotary textile press. In the first video we looked at the number positions very closely. Now we actually print the same numbers using the same positions. You’ll find out how to print double digits wet without flash curing the first number as well as how to print double digits with the number 1 which changes the game a bit. This is an excellent video to watch if you saw the first one and you are thinking about buying a numbering system.
